last week we posted an article about provisional driving permits, which caused significant attractions. many of our overseas friends want to know how to ride through china on two wheels. here are a few tips that you couldn’t miss! 

driving license

it’s important to bear in mind that foreign driving licenses, including international driving permits, are not recognized in china, which means that foreign rider must have a chinese driving license. 

provisional driving permits

if you are a tourist or an exchange student wishing to drive in china for a short period of time, provisional driving permits would be the best choice for you.

required materials

• identity document for exit-entry of the people’s republic of china
• driving license in your home country
• two documents’ chinese translations
• recently-taken 1-inch photos with white background

processing stations

more and more windows are set up to facilitate overseas tourists to apply for the permits. 

you can obtain this provisional permits at the local traffic police departments or some cities’ airports. we found that these places have already provided the services: 

• beijing capital international airport
• shanghai hongqiao international airport
• shenzhen bao’an international airport
• chengdu shuangliu international airport
• haikou meilan international airport
• sanya phoenix international airport
• tianjin port free trade zone

reminders

1. necessary overseas driving license

apparently your original driving license is needed to prove your qualification since there’s no exam. 

if you have no driving license, you need to take exams and get a chinese driving license. 

categories of vehicles operated in china depend on your original license. so if the permitted driving type of your driving license is a small vehicle, for example, then you are not allowed to ride motorcycles in the country. 

2. concrete identity certificates 

according to the regulations, identity documents for exit-entry refers to: 

• passport or other travel permit held at the time of entry; 

• valid visa or stay/residence permit with a stay/residence period of over 3 months; 

• proof of stay registration issued by the local public security department. 

the validity term of the license will be for a minimum of 3 months and can be extended to a year if the holder will stay for more than three months.

for who has home driving license

required materials

• passport and residence permit or chinese visa with at least three months of validity (original and photocopy); 

• record of temporary residence registration obtained at the local police station (original and photocopy); 

• driving license from your home country (original and photocopy); 

• certified and notarized translation of the driving license from the home country to chinese language (in many places, such as beijing, you only need to provide a translation signed by a chinese national and bring the copy of his/her id card); 

• medical certificate (complete health check-up done at a city hospital); 

• three to five one-inch color photos with a white background.

reminders

just like provisional driving permits, it is not allowed to ride motorcycles if the permitted driving type of your original license is not a motorcycle.

for who doesn’t

if you are over 18 years of age and get a driving license for the first time, you have to get enrolled in motorcycle driving school and take the exams first, then apply for the license. 

required materials

• passport and residence permit with at least 3 months of validity (original and photocopy);

• medical certificate; 

• three to five one-inch color photos with a white background. 

reminders

the permitted driving types of motorcycles include:

• d: common three-wheel motorcycle
  

• e: common two-wheel motorcycle

• f: light motorcycle

who has the d driving license can also drive the e type, and who has the e license can drive f type.

cities ban motorcycles

not all chinese cities and regions allow motorcycles so that motorcycle licenses are not permitted in these places. 

it is reported that over 185 cities in china ban or limit motorcycles so you’d better check the local rules first.

halloween is coming and there are many amusement activities in chinese cities now. recently guangzhou metro asks passengers to remove their spooky halloween makeup before entering metro stations. 

according to the global times’ reports, guangzhou metro in south china’s guangdong province just tries to prevent passengers from panicking. 

transit workers at the city’s hanxi changlong station had asked pre-halloween revelers to wipe off their makeup before being allowed to pass security checks. 

“some of the passengers’ makeup was really scary so we advised them to remove their makeup. most of the passengers agreed,” a staffer with the metro station told pear video on monday. 

hanxi changlong station is near the chimelong paradise amusement park, where halloween activities are being held in a warm-up to the festival. 

a transit worker said local public security authorities noticed some passengers wore makeup that looked like they were bleeding, and worried it might cause panic among the other passengers. 

“we provided some makeup remover for the passengers,” the staffer said. 

the move has attracted significant attention on chinese social media as many big cities gear up for a weekend of halloween parties. 

though the guangzhou metro is accused of lacking halloween spirit, there are many netizens support it, saying the scary makeup may cause a major panic.

a suggestion to lower the minimum marriage age in china has been widely argued on the internet these days. it is said that women may marry from 18. 

propose to change

ding lieming, a national people’s congress deputy, suggested in march to lower china’s marriage age that the man reached 20 and the woman reached 18, in order to encourage childbirth. 

many netizens post their opinions against the idea, saying that it is too young to enter into the commitment of family. 

it may intensify social contradictory. 

some say that the most essential part to impact the marriage age is not the childbirth issue but the capability of bearing responsibilities.

on oct 21, a new draft of the marriage and family section of the civil code was submitted to the session, proposing a new clause that families shall establish good family traditions, carry forward family virtues and attach importance to promoting familial culture.

the news immediately hit weibo and raised heated discussion. 

people strongly support that not to lower the minimum age, saying that it’s not appropriate to marry at 20 in most case.

how to marry in chn? 

so, what is required to get married in china? 

first thing first, china has released an announcement, saying that marriage registration for both parties who are not mainlanders is canceled. 

this means that if you and your fiancé/fiancée can not obtain a chinese marriage certificate if both of you are foreigners or not mainlanders of china. 

but marriages between a foreigner and chinese national are still permitted if the chinese citizen is not: 

• an army man in active service, diplomatic personnel, public security personnel, confidential personnel, or other personnel who is in charge of important confidential work;

   

• a person who is receiving reeducation through labor or serving a sentence.

if you two meet all the conditions and are allowed to obtain chinese marriage certificates, the required documents you need to prepare are: 

for foreigners

• the valid passport or other valid international travel certificates of the applicant. 

   

• certificate of no spouse issued by the notary office or the authoritative agency in his/her home country and authenticated by the chinese embassy(consulate) in that country or home country’s embassy (consulate) in china; or certificate of no spouse issued by the embassy (consulate) of the applicant’s home country in china (the name, date of birth, and certificate number on the single status certificate must be in consistent with those appearing on the passport, and the applicant’s current marital status must be clearly indicated as single on the single status certificate).

   

• translated documents of certificate or declaration of no spouse (everything in foreign language must be translated into chinese).

   

• photocopies (a4) of valid passport or other valid international travel certificates: the personal information page and photo-containing page of passport or certificates, valid visa page, and the latest port entry page of passport. 

for chinese citizen

• the household residence book, 
  (note: the marital status on the household residence book shall be consistent with the actual marital status of the applicant, which shall be “single”, “divorced”, or “widowed”). 

   

• personal id card 

   

• declaration with signature which declares that the applicant has no lineal relative by blood and collateral relatives by blood up to three generations with the other party.

   

• photocopies (a4): the first page and the personal information page of the applicant’s household residence book; both sides of the personal id card.
